‘National Webinar on Disaster Management in Horticultural Crops’

Under the ongoing Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav, ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Lucknow in collaboration with National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Delhi organized a ‘National Webinar on Disaster Management in Horticultural Crops’ on 26th July, 2022 at 2:30 PM with the aim to sensitize the horticultural fraternity and other stakeholders about vulnerabilities and hazards facing Indian horticulture industry due to natural disasters and the pathways to develop disaster resilient horticultural systems. Dr. Neelima Garg, Director, ICAR- CISH, Lucknow welcome the Chief Guest, speakers and participants. Dr. Garg highlighted the different types of disasters that affects the subtropical fruits and mentioned the issues related to futuristic food security. Chief Guest of the webinar Dr. Anand Kumar Singh, DDG (Horticulture) addressed the webinar. During the talk he explained that how disasters can impact the disruption of supply chain and transportation of horticultural produce. DDG highlighted the ill effect of climate change and occurrence of cyclone which can badly impact subtropical fruit crops. He suggested that focus must be on climate resilient crops so that they can adopt themselves to the climatic disruption. Keynote speaker of the webinar Prof. Anil Kumar Gupta, Professor, NIDM, Delhi highlighted the global scenario of the disasters and talk on current IPCC report. He suggested that our efforts towards climate change have been inadequate and the abrupt impact has been observed in the land, weather, productivity and food processing system. He talks on current journey of SDGs which will end in 2030, therefore, we should talk about the post SDG condition where we are going to face the new challenges and solve them with new technologies. Dr. A. K. Trivedi, Principal Scientist, talk on risk and challenges of different subtropical fruits. He also suggested the mitigation strategies and supporting role of orchards to combat the ill effects of disasters. Dr. Rocky Thokchom, Assistant Prof. FGI, Manipur highlighted on disaster management in horticultural crops, he also raised the concerned on disasters affected sectors whose activities are adversely affected by weather change that results the huge economic losses and disruption of livelihood security. The Webinar was attended by 110 participants and programme was coordinated by Dr. Karma Beer, Scientist, ICAR- CISH, Lucknow and Dr. Sweta Baidya Consultant, ECDRM, NIDM, New Delhi.
