Integrated pest management in mango

Inflorescence midge (Erosomyia indica Grover)

  • Attacks at two different stages during January and May; first at flower bud burst stage, most damaging ; larvae tunnel the axis of inflorescence and destroy completely
  • Second attack starts at fruit set as young maggots bore into tender fruits; affected fruits slowly turn yellow and drop
  • Pest infestation could be made out from appearance of tiny black spots on inflorescence

Integrated management

  • Ploughing of orchards in November-December to expose pupae
  • Spray dimethoate (0.06%) at bud burst
  • Dusting of 1.5 per cent chlorpyriphos in soil beneath the canopy area during April-May to kill the larvae
